How do you decide to read a book by an author you haven’t read before? What sort of recommendations count most highly in making that decision?

If my friend or my sister recommends a book, I am one HUNDRED times more likely to read it than just picking it up on a whim. What can I say? I trust the people who know me and know what I'd appreciate.

However, I also trust The New York Times. USA Today. And a variety of blogs -- but only if a certain author has been mentioned a lot.


I have hard time just picking up a book on a whim if I've never heard of it before. I should probably get over this---there's a LOT of great stories out there written by those we just don't know yet.
